Rhubarb Fest 2016

Rhubarb Fest website  |  Rhubarb Fest on Facebook

Our 4th annual Rhubarb Fest was amazing! Thank you to all our volunteers and everyone that came out and had a great day in the sun.

We kicked off the festival with the official grand opening of the new Southwood skatepark. Our festival grew in size in 2016 and the skatepark was a central piece in the middle of all the other activities. It has been very popular for all ages and skill levels since it opened, and it was no exception at Rhubarb Fest! It was great to see so many different people using it and enjoying Southwood’s newest amenity.

We once again collected donations for the Calgary Food Bank and thanks to the generosity of people attending we collected 320 pounds of food donations.

This event would not be possible without a small army of volunteers. This year we had 52 volunteers help us with the festival. A huge thank you to the community volunteers that came out to help set up the festival, take on key positions during the festival and assist with the tear down of the festival! We truly appreciate everything you did and hundreds of people had a fantastic day due to your efforts.

We once again partnered with Village Brewery and this year we also sold Field Stone Fruit Wines in our beer garden. We cooked up Spolumbo’s sausages on the BBQ, served up strawberry-rhubarb pie. We partnered with X92.9 radio station and in addition to promoting the festival, they joined us on location.

We had five bands perform this year: Steel & Timber, Tanner James, Windigo, Jesse and the Dandelions, and Copperhead. BassBus was on location taking care of all the bands’ sound needs this year.

We once again had a market place which included 47 tables of local artists and artisans, Calgary Weekend Market, City departments, local businesses and organizations.

There was a lot for kids to take part in and the following activities were quite popular:

  • Sky High Bouncers
  • Butterfield Acres Petting Zoo
  • Springfree Trampolines
  • Terrrrrific Face Painting
  • The Amaze Arts’ Craft Zone
  • The Activity Zone
  • Pedalheads’ Obstacle Course
  • James Jordan’s magic shows

Green Event Services once again helped us with Rhubarb Fest’s waste management. This was a huge success as we increased our diversion rate to 88% this year, compared to 82% in 2015. Village Brewery provided compostable pint glasses and the community association purchased compostable products for the BBQ: plates, napkins, and cutlery. Plus, the drink cups at the water station were also compostable.

Due to the efforts of everyone involved we were able to divert 88% of our waste away from the landfill. Only 9kg of waste went to the landfill, this was an improvement from 14kg in 2015. In total, 66kg of waste was diverted from the landfill to compost, mixed recycling or beverage container recycling.
