Memberships

The Southwood Community Association works hard to make our neighbourhood a great place to live and work. We bring people together through special events and by creating gathering places like the rinks and community garden. We provide a forum for local issues, helping give your opinions clout when presented to The City through our Councillor’s office.

By becoming a member, you help us strengthen our community programs, events and activities, and to develop new and innovative projects to better serve our community. If COVID restrictions life, we will be holding free special events just for members.

Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteer Coordinator | Ongoing, hours depend on events schedule | Not required to attend all board meetings

Are you an expert relationship builder and wrangler of people? In this role, you’ll arrange volunteers for events and communicate all event-day details. You’ll also act as day-of support and a point of contact for volunteers at events. You’ll develop and maintain a list of interested volunteers and think of ways to get our community more actively involved in volunteering. This role will work closely with the communications and program directors.

Social media coordinator(s) | Ongoing, 4 - 6 hours per month max | Not required to attend all board meetings

Looking to build your social media and marketing skills? In this role, you’ll develop content for multiple platforms (Facebook, Instagram), write social copy, and create graphics that will catch community member’s eyes. You’ll also take an administrator role on our social accounts, making sure participants agree and adhere to group rules and taking action on flagged or inappropriate content. This is a fun and creative position where you can expect to build your writing and design skills, especially through use of our Canva Pro account! You’ll work with and report to the communications director to develop and execute on a content calendar, planning two to three weekly posts of community-related content.

Newsletter Coordinator - print and digital (or digital role can be separate) | 3 - 5 hours per month approximately | Not required to attend all board meetings

Like to write, plan, and organize content? Then this position is for you. This volunteer role will brainstorm, plan, and create newsletter content, accept external content submissions, and compile and submit content for print newsletter production. You can expect to spend a couple hours each month at the end of the month putting the print newsletter together. We’re in the process of launching an e-newsletter, which will feature a blend of print newsletter content and additional e-newsletter specific content. Print newsletter content submission is one month before print date, while the e-newsletter will be more agile and have less content restrictions.

Volunteers.

Did you know? There are 3,550 households in Southwood. What would it look like if each household volunteered 1 hour every year to the community?

That’s 148 days!
